Optimizing Apps

Last week we talked about the power of accountability. One tool we can use to be accountable to someone else is a food log.

Many great apps are available...MyFitnessPal, LoseIt, etc.

These apps are typically used as a food log. What I eat, I log. Reactive.

What if we looked at these tools from a different angle? A proactive angle.

What if they were food planners instead of food logs?

Would you get in the car without a plan of where you were going? Would a teacher teach a lesson without a lesson plan? Would a pastor step up to the pulpit without a plan of what he will say?

Most likely no.

So why do we think this way about the food we will eat on any given day?

What if the morning of, or the night before, we entered all the food we would eat the next day. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, dessert. Everything. Why would we do this quick exercise? Glad you asked.

1. It gives us a plan to follow - Plans give us confidence and set us up for success.

2. It acts as a decision - When we record our food ahead of time, we are making a conscious choice as to what we will eat that day. We are being proactive rather than reactive.

3. We are more likely to be compliant - Human nature and change psychology tell us that when we make a written commitment (or any commitment for that matter) we are far more likely to follow through with it. Logging our food is a form of commitment.

While counting exact calories is typically unnecessary, inaccurate, and tedious, logging and planning our food can be a powerful strategy.

So today, let’s plan our food, and share our successes and setbacks with someone else...one-minute at a time.

If you are new to the blog, I want to encourage you to go back and check out my previous posts, as they serve as the foundation for what we talk about each week.
