In my humble opinion, counting calories, well, sucks. Calories are important, but there’s far more to the story. We will leave the fact that counting calories is inefficient, inaccurate, and oftentimes ineffective to another post.
Today...a simple calorie counter that you CANNOT leave home without (unless you are the notorious villain from Peter Pan) Thank you to Precision Nutrition for introducing me to the Portable Calorie Counter...a.k.a. your hand.
Using your hand your can portion your meals simply and accurately. Remember these guidelines are simply starting points. Adjust as needed based on your body type, your goals, your activity level and what you find works for you. Check out the infographic below for more detail.
Here goes:
Look at your palm. That’s your protein. 2 palms for men, 1 for women (my wife did not think this was fair...if it makes you feel any better women usually live longer :) )
Make a fist. That’s your veggies. 2 fists for men, 1 for women.
Cup your hand. That’s your healthy carbs. 2 cupped hands for men, 1 for women.
Give a thumbs up. Your thumb is your healthy fats. 2 thumbs for men, 1 for women.
That’s it.
Try it out, it’s simple, it’s repeatable, it’s handy (sorry), and it’s a heck of a lot more fun than counting calories. Here’s to using your new calorie counter...one minute at a time.
