My 5-year-old son is literally obsessed with numbers and time. “Daddy, does 99 + 99 equal 198?” “Yes buddy.” “Daddy, it’s 3 hours, 21 minutes, and 12 seconds until we go to church.” “Thanks for the update buddy.” Now looking back at the titles of many of my blog posts, apparently the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!
So apologies ahead of time for another numbers post..they just makes sense to me.
The 80/20 rule tells us that we get 80% of our results from 20% of our efforts.
Here’s the problem.
Most of us focus on the wrong 20%.
Person #1: Struggles with weight loss (even though they try really hard): 80% of their focus is on exercise.
20% is on what they eat.
Person #2: Is successful with weight loss (they probably try less hard than the person above):
80% of their focus is on what they eat.
20% of their focus is on exercise.
You have probably heard it before, but you really can't out exercise a poor diet.
You can try, but you’ll end up frustrated, perplexed, and reaching for way more food than you need.
Now that being said, exercise is amazing. It improves your mood, increases heart health, strengthens muscles and bones, boosts energy, reduces risk for chronic disease...the list goes on and on.
Just don’t use it as your main tool for weight loss.
More importantly, don’t neglect your nutrition, thinking exercise will take care of it.
It’s like trying to pound a nail with a wrench. You might make a dent in the wood, but not enough to make a difference.
A good nutrition coach can help you with your food habits. They can help you make small changes that seem doable to you, that lead to big results over time.
Or you can go at it on your own.
Either way, let’s use the right tool for the right job...one-minute at a time.
