Have you ever had a time in your life when you just weren’t clear about what you should do? Maybe professionally or personally. Maybe you are in one of those times right now.
How did you feel?
I’ve had several such moments in my life...one just recently.
Now this may seem insignificant, but last week, I was indecisive on how I would eat at a party that night.
I knew there would be pizza, cookies, and other foods that tend to tempt me.
Normally it would be a solid NO for me on these foods. But for whatever reason, I went back and forth on it that day. “Should I eat a piece or two? It’s been a tough week. I don’t want to miss out on this experience. No, I shouldn’t..well maybe?”
Internal struggle. Guess what happened. I ate. I ate a lot. I ate to the point where I felt sick.
Now don’t miss this. It wasn’t the fact that I was going to eat pizza that was the issue. The issue was the lack of clarity.
Had I said I wouldn’t eat any pizza. I wouldn’t have eaten any pizza.
Even if I had planned to have 2 pieces of pizza and half a cookie, I would have most likely followed through with that.
But because I lacked clarity and went in with no plan, I made eating decisions that I later regretted.
I share this for two reasons.
1. I struggle at times with my nutrition.
2. Clarity is huge.
I am going to recommend two kinds of clarity today.
Foundational Clarity
Socrates said, “Know thyself.”
Know yourself nutritionally. Know who you are and your beliefs. Are you Paleo? Vegan? Keto? Do you take a more balanced approach? Get extreme clarity on your nutritional philosophy.
Yes, this may take time and research. It also will be an evolving process.
But it is worth it. Get started clearly defining what you are about nutritionally.
Context-Specific Clarity
If you are clear foundationally, context-specific clarity will be much easier.
Here we want to decide how we will eat in situations...BEFORE we are in those situations.
Ask yourself...
How will I eat when I am stressed? How will I eat when I go to a party? How will I eat when a coworker unexpectedly brings in donuts? How will I eat when my family goes out to dinner?
Set your intentions clearly ahead of time and you will be FAR more likely to follow through when the situation arises.
So, today, get crystal clear on who you aspire to be nutritionally. And situationally, decide how you will eat ahead of time...one-minute at a time.
