For the next several weeks, I am going to highlight my favorite passages from the “God’s Temple” devotional. Enjoy!
For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. -1 Timothy 4:8
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. -1 Corinthians 6:19-20
1 Timothy 4:8 has always been a tough one for me. I believe the food we eat, the way we move our bodies, and the sleep we get are vital for optimal living.
That being said, this verse clearly tells us that there is only “some value” in the physical.
Spiritual trumps physical. Period. God is what matters most, and in turn, the state of our relationship with Him is what holds value both now and forever.
As we dive into this devotional focused on the physical, let us not forget what is ultimate. Whatever we do with our physical bodies must always point back to our Creator. He created us in these bodies, and gave us the gifts of food, movement, and rest.
At the same time, we cannot neglect the physical. Compared to the state of our soul, the physical feels unimportant. But in terms of living the life God has called us to live, it is of the utmost importance.
As we eat well, move well, and rest well, we improve the quality of our lives so we can live longer, do God’s work longer, and impact more people.
Not only are our bodies vital for living the life in which God has called us, they are also the home for the Holy Spirit living inside of us. God literally lives in our midst, and when we accept Him, His spirit lives inside of our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) That’s a big deal. Let us honor God by honoring our bodies, where His spirit resides.
Prayer: God, remind me that anything I do here on Earth is to point back to You, my creator. Help me to value the food I eat, the way I move my body, and my rest so that I can glorify you and live the life you intended for me.
