How can one person lose 30 pounds on a low carb diet while another person gains 10 pounds, also on a low carb diet?

Even more confusing, how can one person lose 30 pounds on a low fat diet while another person gains 10 pounds, also on a low fat diet?

It seems that people both succeed, and fail on all sorts of diets. Strange.

Today, I want to simplify the commonalities between all successful diets.

According to Robert Lustig, author of the great book Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease, all successful diets have two things in common.

1. They reduce sugar

2. They are high in fiber (and therefore high in micronutrients)

* Bonus: They increase exercise

That seems pretty simple. Not easy, but simple.

So here’s the how:

Reduce Sugar

- Stop drinking your sugar. That’s you soda and fruit juices (yes, even 100% fruit juice). Lustig says that 100% fruit juice actually has more fructose (sugar) than soda. So think twice, or more about drinking that OJ for breakfast.

- Get rid of the processed foods - They all have sugar in one form or another.

- Don’t buy into the low sugar processed food marketing. Focus on whole foods.

Increase Fiber

- Eat vegetables

- Eat fruit - yes, fruit has fructose, but it is nicely protected by its fiber.

- Eat whole food carb sources

There are of course more ways to decrease sugar and increase fiber, but that is a good start.

Add in some consistent exercise (even if for just 15 minutes a day) and you are on your way to improved health and a healthier weight.

So today, keep it simple and reduce your sugar, increase your fiber, and get moving.
