Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green
plants, I now give you anything. -Genesis 9:3
Last week, we discovered what we do not want to be putting into our bodies.
Can you remember all 3?
Today let’s focus on what we want to put into our bodies.
In Genesis, God sums it up pretty nicely.
Plants and everything that lives.
Fast forward thousands of years, and Michael Pollan says we should, “Eat Food. Mostly Plants. Not Too Much.”
Different time period, similar advice. If God made it, it is probably a pretty good
choice. If humans manufactured it, it is probably not.
There are a few keys that almost all diets have in common. One is that they
almost all include an increase in vegetables. We want a variety of vegetables,
with green, leafy vegetables being at the top of our list.
I know you have heard it before, but there is a reason we are told to eat our veggies from a young age.
Most of us are not eating enough vegetables. A good goal to shoot for is half our
plate filled with veggies (1-2 Cups). If that seems like a lot, start small. Add a little
more than you currently eat. Then a little more. Build the habit of adding more
vegetables into your diet.
God also said everything that moves is food for us. Here God says it’s okay for us
to eat meat. I am not going to argue for any particular diet in this devotional.
Different diets can be successful for different people at different times. With
meat, ask yourself, “Is this processed? Was the animal in its natural environment,
eating its natural food, free from anything unnatural?”
Practically speaking, I know I can go and find broccoli growing in the ground. I
can pick an orange off a tree. I cannot find a Cheetos tree. If God made it, it can
be a part of my diet. If not, I’ll pass.
Prayer: God, you gave me such a diverse menu of foods to eat. Help me to stick to the
foods that you made, and avoid the foods humans have manufactured. Let my body be
nourished by these choices, so I can be energized to live the life you have called me to.
