Sorry for the catchy title, but we will talk about each of those today.
There is an unbelievable amount of nutritional wisdom out there. I love studying it and then giving you the highlights. Here are 3 ideas, 2 quotes, and 1 question to improve your nutrition. Thank you to James Clear for the inspiration on the format.
3 Ideas
1. Nutrient Density - Dr. Joel Fuhrman has a measure of food called an ANDI score in which he rates the nutrient density of food. The more nutrient dense foods you eat the more satisfied you will be. Top of the list? Kale with a score of 1000. Followed by a ton of other veggies. Cola is at the bottom of the list with a 1. Want to know what's in between? Check out these 2 links. Short List. Long List.
2. More from Dr. Fuhrman. If you looked at his ANSI scores, you probably noticed all the top foods were vegetables. He recommends his clients put the following phrase on their fridge. "THE SALAD IS THE MAIN DISH."
3. Waist to Height Ratio - There are a lot of measures of health. One great predictor is your waist to height ratio (WtHR). This measure is directly correlated with the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cancer and other chronic diseases. The reason? Belly fat or visceral fat has potentially a greater negative impact on health than other fat, regardless of a person's weight. Check out the books The Overfat Pandemic and Fat Chance for more. For now, you want your waist in inches to be less than half your height in inches.
2 Quotes
1. “Science has proven that food addiction is real. As real as cocaine or heroin addiction. There is no physiological difference. Have you ever made a rational decision to turn away from foods that are harming you, but then found yourself eating them anyway? That’s addiction. People ask me,’ Really, sugar and flour are as addictive a cocaine and heroin?’ Actually, researchers estimate they might be more addictive.”
2. “Every cell in your taste buds dies and is replaced by a brand-new taste bud cell every two weeks."
-Susan Thompson (both quotes)
Any healthy foods you don't have a taste for? Eat them for a couple weeks. You might just change your mind..and your taste buds.
1 Question
What is your waist to height ratio (WtHR)? Remember we want it less than 0.5. Use this nifty WtHR calculator to help you out.
