Could Healthy Foods Be Keeping You From Your Health Goals?

I want you to think about the foods that tempt you most.

The foods that seem to call your name, daring you to eat them.

In the Bible it was an apple calling out to Adam. Today it might be a bag of potato chips, a tub of ice cream, or maybe something a little less obvious.

I call these kryptonites, and we all have them.

Superman’s kryptonite was well, kryptonite.

For us, it’s the foods that you just can’t seem to say no to.

Kryptonites are foods that we need to remove from our environment. Remove from our home...remove from our office...remove from our car...remove from our purse...remove from anywhere we find ourselves often.

We want to make it difficult to get these foods.

When I was younger, if I wanted ice cream, I went to my freezer to get ice cream. Guess what I ate a lot of. Ice cream.

Today if I want ice cream I need to get in the car, go to an ice cream store, buy ice cream and eat it. Guess what I eat less of now. You got it.

That’s pretty obvious, but here’s one interesting twist.

What if your kryptonite isn’t an obviously unhealthy food?

Want to know mine? 85% Dark Cacoa and pistachios.

Now these aren’t unhealthy foods. Many would argue that in small amounts, they have a lot of health benefits. For me though, they are kryptonites.

Here’s the problem. When they are in the house I eat a lot of them. Even worse, they start me on a path of eating a bunch of other stuff. I eat a handful of pistachios. Then I eat a few pieces of dark chocolate. Then an apple. Then a Lara Bar. Then some blueberries and yogurt. Then some a handful of walnuts and a return to the dark chocolate and pistachios. This is all after a good-sized dinner.

Yes this has happened to me...several times.

There is nothing wrong with these foods on their own, but eating them mindlessly, when I am not even hungry, is a problem.

These kryptonites start a cycle of eating that can quickly get out of hand.

So the takeaway today is simple.

1. Identify your kryptonites (don’t forget to consider “healthy” foods)

2. Remove them from your environment
