Are You a World-Class Athlete? Me Neither.

Let me ask you an honest question. Are you a world-class athlete? If yes, congratulations, that’s really cool. If no like most of us, do you still think like one?

A world-class athlete needs their nutrition and exercise monitored down to the smallest detail. They might consider exact calorie counts, the perfect exercise routine, intermittent fasting, carb cycling, nutrition and workout timing, and the list goes on.

This was a mistake I fell into often, and sometimes still do. I was a college athlete (like 15 years ago) and perhaps then some of these strategies could have helped me gain a competitive edge. But even then, I was FAR from being world class.

When you worry about getting everything perfect, oftentimes you neglect the simple, not-so-exciting strategies that really make a difference. When you think at a level 2, when you’re really a level 1, you neglect the level 1 behaviors.

Let me give you a personal example. I remember asking my buddy, who is way further in this nutritional journey than I am, all about intermittent fasting. Now I am in no way knocking intermittent fasting. The problem was that while I was intermittent fasting in the morning, I was crushing a bowl of cereal, half a bag of popcorn, and several other processed foods in the evening.

I would have been better off forgetting about intermittent fasting and focusing on the habit of eating less processed foods or another more elementary strategy.

In the next few posts we’ll explore some simple strategies we can use that are better fit for 99% of people. Until then, let’s shift our thinking away from perfection and toward incremental progress...one-minute at a time.
