A BIG STEP AND A SMALL STEP YOU CAN TAKE TODAY

Ever feel like it’s taking you forever to reach your goal?

Or conversely, the goal is so big you can’t even start?

Taking small steps toward a goal can feel tedious, but taking big steps often feels overwhelming and impossible.

I want to give you 1 BIG STEP and 1 SMALL STEP you can take today.

THE BIG STEP:

The big step is to decide and define your identity today.

Get out some paper and fill in the blank: I am a/an _____________________.

I am an athlete.

I am a healthy person.

I am a great dad (this doesn’t just have to be nutrition related).

Whatever you want to be, decide it and define it clearly.

This seems simple, and easy, but how many of us are crystal clear on WHO we want to be?

How many of us have written it down?

How many of us write it down every day? *Side note - you are 42% more likely to reach a goal if you write it down. Seems like a simple way to increase your odds 😉)

THE SMALL STEP:

Counterintuitively, the small step is more difficult than the big step.

The small step is to decide on one, very doable action you will commit to that is on the path toward your identity.

Make that small step a new part of your life, and once you do, pick a new small step toward your identity. Repeat...repeat...repeat.

Let’s look at an example:

BIG STEP: I am a healthy person

SMALL STEP #1: I will take a 20-minute walk every day.

SMALL STEP #2 (After #1 is solid): I will replace my lunch sandwich with a salad.

And so on...

OR BIG STEP: I am a great dad

SMALL STEP: I will read a story to my kids every night.

SMALL STEP #2 (After #1 is solid): I will put my technology away after dinner.

And so on...

One mistake so many people make is that they try to do much.

I’m going to do an hour workout, eat completely clean foods, read my Bible and pray for an hour, and be a great husband and dad every day.

All worthy goals...but too much. Too soon.

So we’ll either keep that up for a few days or weeks at best and then stop, or just do nothing because it’s too overwhelming.

So today, start with your BIG STEP and then move to your SMALL STEP. Write them down every day, and repeat...repeat...repeat.
